WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO SAY?
TYPES OF RESPONSES TO GIVE TO A WRITER

1. “Thank you” – Just be a thoughtful and interested audience. Just listen and enjoy.
2. “You seem to be saying that…” – Say back to the writer what you think he/she is saying in this piece.
3. “I want to hear more about…” – Tell the writer what you feel is missing, what you want to hear/know more about.
4. “I think you wrote this to show that…” – Tell the writer what kind of message you are getting out of this.
5. “These words really…” – Point to the words, phrases, or sections that stood out for you or that stuck in your mind.
6. “You sound like (a)… in this piece because…” – Tell the writer what voice you hear in his/her writing.
7. “I saw…in my mind when you read this.” – Tell the writer about the movie in your mind that came from this piece of writing.
8. “The (title) (plot) (setting) or (description) is really…(clear/confusing) or (interesting/bland) ” – Reply to the writer by pointing to something specific that is exceptionally good or weak.
9. “This is where I see your … error” – Point out to the writer where there are errors in mechanics, usage, grammar, or spelling. Also, weakness in clarity, organization, or focus.
10. Writer's Option - The writer tells the reader exactly what he/she wants for feedback as a way to improve the piece of writing.
